Insider: Canon EOS R7 Disassembly and Teardown

In May 2022, Canon introduced the EOS R7, the first APS-C camera in the relatively young R system. The camera sensor has a resolution of 32.5 megapixels and is moving - the manufacturer promises 7-stage image stabilisation. On the data sheet, it is a very powerful, small camera with many functions and great ergonomics. But what does it look like under the hood and, above all, how suitable is it for infrared photography?

Infrared Workshops 2023

The workshop dates for 2023 are fixed! From May 12 to 14, an Infrared Workshop will again take place on the island of Rügen. From 02 to 04 June 2023, the workshop will be held in southern Germany (North Swabia).

The new darktable version 4.0 was released about 4 weeks ago. Of course I give an overview about the new features and changes - especially for IR photography. One thing right away: most of the changes are under the hood and for IR processing almost nothing has changed.

To get an appealing color infrared with yellow foliage and blue sky a channel swap is usually necessary. With the exception of the InfraBlue filter, obviously this is true, but there may be subjects that simply look better without a channel swap. But when is that the case, and how do you know what works better?

Ep. 40: Infrared Lensflares in Backlight - InfraBlue

In Infrared Photography there are a few problems and image errors that are not known in "normal" photography. Lens flares in backlight situations are an example, which is why it is rather common not to have the sun directly in the picture. Nevertheless, it can sometimes be worthwhile to do it anyway and to include the resulting "image errors" directly in the composition of the image. The low sun was intentionally placed here as a counterweight to the tree on the right side of the image. The lens flares extend over the entire image and give the sun a much greater meaning in the image. Without the lens flares, it would probably be "only" the brightest point in the picture, but this way it influences the entire scenery even into the shadow areas.

Infrared Workshops 2022

I have hesitated and waited for a long time, but now the Corona situation seems to relax and I consider the workshops in July sufficiently safe to plan. Both in the north and in the south of Germany there are dates that can be booked now. The Workshops are teached in German language only.

The workshops are aimed at beginners and advanced infrared photography, basic photographic knowledge is assumed. Having your own infrared camera is a great advantage, but not a must. Those who do not yet own a camera, or would like to try a different model, have the opportunity to borrow a device for the duration of the workshop.

Ep. 39: Review of darktable 3.8 for Infrared Image Editing

The new darktable version 3.8 is released and of course we have a look at the new features from an infrared post-processing point of view. Generally this version offers a lot of improvements and some very exciting new modules. I will not discuss all the new features but only those that are relevant for IR photography. All details and features are explained on the website (also with the latest manual by the way).

Calendar Wild Rügen 2022

The calendar "Wild Rügen 2022" shows the nature of Germany's largest island in very special light. From the chalk coast on the Baltic Sea to the meadows and forests of the central island to the special natural areas on the Bodden coast, the calendar takes you through the year. Special natural areas, natural spectacles and small details of the island are captured on 12 varied calendar pages. The calendar is printed on 100 % recycled paper.

Ep. 38: Lübeck in Infrared: BW using only red channel

Normally, a good white balance is necessary even for a black and white infrared image. However, this always introduces noise into the image. With older cameras, which are quite noise prone, there is a little trick. You can use only one color channel of the image to create a black and white image. Of course, the red channel is the best choice because it is the brightest. How you can do this with darktable is shown in this video.
