Infrared Workshops 2022

Infrarot Workshop Nordschwaben 2022

I have hesitated and waited for a long time, but now the Corona situation seems to relax and I consider the workshops in July sufficiently safe to plan. Both in the north and in the south of Germany there are dates that can be booked now. The Workshops are teached in German language only.

The workshops are aimed at beginners and advanced infrared photography, basic photographic knowledge is assumed. Having your own infrared camera is a great advantage, but not a must. Those who do not yet own a camera, or would like to try a different model, have the opportunity to borrow a device for the duration of the workshop.

Ep. 39: Review of darktable 3.8 for Infrared Image Editing

darktable 3.8 Video Review

The new darktable version 3.8 is released and of course we have a look at the new features from an infrared post-processing point of view. Generally this version offers a lot of improvements and some very exciting new modules. I will not discuss all the new features but only those that are relevant for IR photography. All details and features are explained on the website (also with the latest manual by the way).

A big thank you to all developers and people involved!

Infrared in Portrait, Street and Architecture Photography

Potsdam-Babelsberg - Klaus D. Fahlbusch

An article by Klaus D. Fahlbusch

I experimented with infrared films (ORWO, later Konica) back in the days of analogue negative film. Certain experiences from that time, for example the angle of sunlight to the desired effect, are still valid today. For me, only the use in black and white photography is interesting, for which I have tried out several cameras.

Ep. 38: Lübeck in Infrared: BW using only red channel

Ep. 38: Lübeck in Infrarot - SW nur mit Rotkanal - 700 nm

Normally, a good white balance is necessary even for a black and white infrared image. However, this always introduces noise into the image. With older cameras, which are quite noise prone, there is a little trick. You can use only one color channel of the image to create a black and white image. Of course, the red channel is the best choice because it is the brightest. How you can do this with darktable is shown in this video. Many thanks to Markus Weigel for providing the photo from Lübeck!

Ep. 37: Pond Rose Basin in Infrared - Colokey with 700 nm Filter

Ep. 37: Pond Rose Basin in Infrared - Colokey Image editing with 700 nm Filter

A Colorkey infrared processing, meaning blue sky and monochrome landscape, simply never loses its charm. This processing is possible with any Infrared filter that allows color processing. The Colorkey processing itself is done very fast and uncomplicated with darktable. Many thanks to Marion Reibetanz for providing the photo from the Cologne Vorgebirgspark!

Ep. 36: Safiental in Infrared - Black and White Image Processing with 700 nm Filter

Ep. 36: Safiental in 700 nm Infrarot - Schwarz-Weiß Bildbearbeitung mit darktable

With the 700 nm filter you can take both black and white and color infrared images. But you can also use the color information to have maximum control over a black and white image. How to do this with darktable is shown in this tutorial. Many thanks to Gion-Andri Derungs for this beautiful alpine scenario from the Safiental in Switzerland!
