Description

Attention: Cameras marked with two ** have an internal infrared LED. Stray light from this LED can be visible in the image as a light reflex with long exposure times and / or dark lighting conditions. The cameras must be operated at night with the electronic shutter so that the LED is switched off. This may have an effect on the noise behavior or the maximum available exposure time.

Note D780: This model has an LED, but it is extremely weak and only relevant for astro work. The stray light can be completely bypassed by triggering the camera in LiveView mode and activating the "Silent Live View Photography" option in the menu.

Note: For cameras with a *, the automatic sensor cleaning function is lost during conversion. After the conversion, the sensor can be cleaned dry (e.g. with compressed air) or wet (e.g. with swabs) as usual. All preparations and methods available on the market for sensor cleaning can be used.

Astro filter

For astrophotography, you have the choice between a full spectrum filter and a so-called astro filter. Both filters have advantages and disadvantages.

Full spectrum:

  • Not suitable for wide-angle shots due to complex color shifts
  • Additional UHC, bandpass or luminance filters are required
  • Multispectral images in the UV or IR range are possible
  • Halos around bright stars occur in deep-sky images
  • Not recommended for night landscapes

Full spectrum:

  • The color shift can be corrected well with a manual white balance for night landscapes and deep sky
  • Additional filters are not necessary, but possible
  • No multispectral images (UV/IR)
  • No halos due to effective coating of the glass
  • Not recommended for multispectral and scientific imaging in the IR or UV range

You can find more details and sample images in our dedicated Astro articles.
